Whilst planning our my Europe itinerary with A, I was browsing through photos of my previous trip to Paris and realized that there were so many wonderful restaurants we went to that I didn’t blog about !

Especially La Maison de la Truffe in Place de la Madeleine, because I am a truffle pig and I enjoyed the food there tremendously.
Since having a meal there, I have found all ‘truffle-flavoured’ dishes in SG to be chemical tasting and rather synthetic.
This is because restaurants which do not charge astronomical prices for freshly shaved truffle usually end up using large quantities of ‘truffle flavoured’ olive oil to recreate the taste.
The result is a rather cheap tasting oily meal with none of that heady pungent mushroomy perfume that simply elevates every dish you add it to.
Using my white truffle oil from Maison de la Truffe (they also sell gourmet truffle products) , I have made Porcini Linguine, Oeufs en Cocotte (baked cream truffle eggs), Truffled Pommes Puree, and even Truffle cookies.
Woefully, my little bottle is running out – but no matter, in a month’s time I will be at the Maison stocking up ! They also sell truffle butter, truffle preserves, truffle terrines, and dried truffle pasta / risotto.
This experience was two years ago, so I shall do this extremely belated review to the best of my memory.
I felt that the prices were very reasonable for classic French cooking and good ingredients.
Mains range from 29 – 52 Euros, and the price differs depending on whether you wish to have your food sans truffe (no truffles, but what’s the point?), truffe saison (seasonal truffles), or truffe blanche (with white truffles, the rarest kind)
What we tried:
My Truffled Poached Egg (16 Euro) in Gelee, which I just had to try after reading about it in Julie and Julia.
It came with a nice generous slice of black truffle.
I actually really liked it ! Although the jelly was a shock (it was served cold) it had a lovely beefy umami tang and went very well with the pristine poached egg within. Very elegant.
Haha I look so young and tired here – this was after almost a month of non-stop travelling so you can hardly blame me !
Truffled White Sausage with Black Truffle Mashed Potatoes (39 Euro)
This was so hearty and rich and savoury I nearly died ! Not delicate at all, very French – from the brown gravy dotted with cream to the hearty meaty sausage and dense potato mash. Very good value !
Every table came with the accompanying condiments:
To better drown your food in.
K had the Veal Mignon with Mashed Potatoes and Truffe Saison (seasonal Truffles)
The meat was meltingly tender and the potatoes were the perfect foil. So unassuming and simple on the plate but so satisfying on the palate !
Happy man and his meat.
Our companion had the beef , which, according to her, was also super yummy.
La Maison de la Truffe
19 Place de la Madeleine, 75008 Paris, France
Place de la Madeleine is really conveniently located (near Chanel, Hermes, etc) and also smack in the middle of a row of gourmet stores (Fauchon, Hediard) so you have no excuse not to try it out! A and I will be back there for lunch, if possible !
