Sophie Rose x Heidi Hankachi
Recently, we were approached by April at “Hankachi” who shared with me the joys, convenience and the so very quaint habit of carrying around a handkerchief with you. 🙂
It’s not a concept that is new to me – as a child, I would always carry around a hanky with pretty girly prints – they were so useful for me when I was feeling sweaty after a physical education class, had a cut that needed bandaging, spilled food or liquid onto my clothes, or even to carefully wrap up a dropped necklace or earrings which I didn’t want to get lost.
They hold a lot of sentimental value for me too – my late grandfather was always cleaning me up with one of his large, checkered handkerchiefs or fondly tying it around my forehead to absorb my perspiration on a sticky day.
My husband, K, was a big fan of hankies himself – when we were dating, I remember being even more impressed by him than I already was when I got bicycle oil on my knees and he whipped one out and cleaned the mess without a word. There’s just something so old-fashioned and sincere about carrying around a handkerchief – and always being prepared for your own emergencies as well as helping others.
So I was really stoked when I met a kindred spirit in April, who imports beautiful handkerchiefs in the most whimsical designs from Japan. All her designs are carefully curated and hand-carried over. I got so excited just scrolling through the albums on her Facebook page.
She has brought in hankies with beautiful illustrations from My Neighbour Totoro, Shinzi Katoh’s Fairytale Creatures and Paddington Bear, as well as ranges for men.
April also so generously sent Sophie Rose and I a handkerchief to review – as well as one for K to try out. I had some doubts initially about how a baby would find a hanky useful, but after using it for a week, I now favour them over Sophie’s bibs – it’s now being used by the both of us !
Here’s how and why:
We use it in place of a bib
The Heidi Shizi Katoh Hankachi we received for review is very special indeed and not just any regular hanky. It was perfect for wiping up spilt milk from Sophie’s mouth ! One side of the hanky (the printed side) is made out of a very absorbent, netted muslin that is soft to touch and just mops any spills right up.
The other side of the hanky is a fluffy, terry cloth material that will not irritate the most sensitive skin. Sophie liked it so much she kept picking up the fluffy part and rubbing it against her cheeks in delight ! To use, simply fold the top of the hanky into baby’s onesie and it’s secured.
The material is really, really high quality. I’ve started picking it up and choosing it over Sophie’s other regular bibs, which don’t soak up milk half as well and can also be a little rough / plasticky on her skin.
And, of course, the stitching and workmanship are gorgeous – the Heidi embroidery adds a really special touch to her plainer outfits and it looks especially cute when I match them with Sophie Rose’s bows – I’ve already had several parents coming up to me and asking where I got Sophie’s ‘bib’ !
They also double up as a washcloth when I’m outside and I need to clean Sophie up after a mess – they soak up just the right amount of water, are soft enough for sensitive areas, and after wringing them out they dry in less than half an hour – superhandy to bring out. I also use it to wrap up Sophie’s bottles to prevent spills.
Sophie’s Papa also got a hankachi to try !
And it’s become one of his work-day essentials – whether to tuck it into his collar during lunch so he won’t get soup down his work shirt and tie, or to wipe off milk spills when he burps her – I think the Hamamonyo range is perfect for your “Gentleman” and would make a great gift – I’m thinking of buying a few from their Burberry range for him for his birthday ! 🙂
